As New Orleans becomes an increasingly popular destination for fly-anglers, the availability of quality fly-fishing guides becomes limited at times, especially for last-minute trips. Of course, like anywhere else, the further out you can plan betters your chance of hooking up with the right guide.
We travelled to San Diego to hunt mako sharks on 12 weight fly line. Armed with orange and red bait patterns, steel tippet and our Scott 12 wt rods, we boarded Conway Bowman's 26 center console Triton and headed west 8 miles into the blue Pacific Ocean in search of an amazing game fish, the Mako Shark.
July 2008. In the shadow of Mt Haggin (10,400) there lies 4 lakes separated by steep, almost impassable ridges. We fished the 1st lake in late July this year.

Fly Casting Tip of the Month
- When fishing off a flats boat while being poled, its a good idea to eliminate the barb from your hook. This is also a good idea when fishing in windy situations, where you will be wading in the Keys or the Bahamas.
- Reason: there is a decent chance in wind that you might hook yourself and on a flats boat you might hook the push poler. Without the barb, the hook comes out easily & painlessly. Simply crush the barb down with your plier tool.
- When you have a hookup with a redfish or bonefish on a barbless hook, the challenge is to never let slack in the line. Never. If you abide by this simply rule, the fish won't release on account of the barbless hook.
