A redfish diet will be crabs, shrimp and/or smaller bait fish (like cachaho minnow). The best redfish flies will imitate one of these 3. To some extent we will be fishing a larger fly for larger redfish. In the fall/winter season, for bull redfish, we will cast the big boys in the 1/0 to 2/0 range. In the spring/summer we will fish #1 or #2 flies for the rat reds.
Uptown Angler carries the largest and most varied redfish fly collection of any shop in the world. These are our best redfish flies, if we had to choose a few for both spring/summer and fall/winter:
- Kung Fu Crab

- Fools Gold Crab

- Rainy’s Bubble Head Popper

- Waldner Spoon

- EP’s Mantis Shrimp

- EP's Redfish Special

When cast and stripped correctly, crab flies like the Fools Gold and Kung Fu Crab work really well. Enrico’s Redfish Special crab, probably one of the most durable flies you will ever fish as well (tales of guides using a EP redfish special for three days on the water and catching 50 plus fish during that time are common), also works well and emulates crabs that are fleeing from big reds; hint twist the claw fibers on each side, helps to create a better profile. Flies like the Mantis Shrimp work well when brown shrimp or white shrimp are prevalent in early and late summer. For the top water bite, Rainy’s Bubble Head Poppers are great at making fish think a wounded bait fish or shrimp is on the surface and a good way to get your blood pumping too. Last, but certainly not least, is the ever famous Waldner Spoon. These flies emulate smaller bait fish. The flicker through the water of this fly gets takes when other flies are not working.
The trick is to make quality casts and good short strips (we call them micro-strips). On a take, use a strip set to hook the fish.
